These projects come in all shapes and sizes but typically land into one of three categories. We’ll discuss what’s involved for each category and provide examples for your consideration.
Facelift or Updating Renovations are ideal when you want to freshen up a space within the home but have either limited time or money.
A basement facelift typically includes small changes, such as additional lighting, new flooring to increase comfort, or cabinets and closets for increased storage.
Most kitchen facelifts usually include lighting and new hardware to change a dated design. Other options, such as a new backsplash or new/refinished cabinet doors, can have a more dramatic effect.
Bathroom facelifts can also benefit from new lighting and hardware to change the style, but paint and wallpaper can be used to add additional texture and contrast.
Pull-and-Replace Renovations go one step beyond the facelift option but do not involve removing walls or reconfiguring spaces.
For basements, this process normally involves converting a semi-finished basement to a fully finished space by furring out the concrete walls to allow for insulation and drywall, upgrading the HVAC system to handle the added living spaces, or new flooring to cover the exposed concrete slab.
This option can include removing and replacing the kitchen cabinets, countertops, and backsplashes. It can also involve replacing the appliances and light fixtures and refinishing/replacing the flooring.
This renovation level can include removing and replacing the toilet, sink, bath, shower fixtures, cabinets, and faucets in the bathroom. The existing floor must also be removed if you're considering a radiant-heated floor.
A Full-Scale Renovation can involve a specific section of the home, such as the main bedroom and ensuite, one floor of a multistory house, or the entire home. During a full-scale renovation, walls can be added or removed, and utility services (water, gas, and electric) can be relocated to accommodate the family’s needs and lifestyle.

The Five Stages of Residential Renovations
Regardless of the type or size of the project, every successful renovation is made up of four distinct stages.
Planning/Budgeting Stage
Once you’ve determined which type of renovation project (see above) is right for you, the next step is to create your list of “must-have” features and finishes. Once the budget is finalized, it’s time to determine which must-haves can be incorporated into the project.
If hardwood floors are beyond your budget, options like LVT (Luxury Vinyl Tile) and engineered hardwoods can deliver the same wow factor while saving money.
If the price of solid wood custom cabinets is simply too high, adjust the dimensions to facilitate modular semi-custom units instead.
If those granite countertops break the budget, options like porcelain and quartzite can help you get your renovation costs back on track.
Demolition Stage
Even a simple facelift renovation will require some demolition and generate trash, which must be removed from the property. Before demolition begins, we seal off the construction area from the rest of the home (if applicable) to minimize noise and dust levels.
Construction Stage
Depending on the size and scope of your home renovation project, you might want to relocate temporarily. Suppliers will deliver materials during construction, and one to several workers may be on-site daily.
Finishing Stage
With the construction complete, A-10 Contracting will remove any extra building materials and haul away any remaining construction debris. Once we complete the final interior/exterior cleaning, you can begin redecorating and enjoying your renovated home.
